How to Thicken Hair

Hair thinning is often seen in men. It is usually the initial signs of baldness. You may have watched your dad, grandfather, brother, or male friend dealing with thinning hair. Guess what? Women experience it, too.

Thinness of hair in women is normally caused by hormonal changes, particularly during pregnancy and menopause. Thyroid conditions can also negatively affect the hair, as well as other factors like genetics, disease, certain medications, and testosterone levels. Read on to know how you can thicken your hair and prevent it from thinning again.

Tips to Thicken Hair

Choose chemical-free shampoos

One of the main culprits of thinning hair is the shampoo that you use every day. These conditioners, cleansers, and styling products often have chemicals that can damage your hair. The chemical content can cause your hair to dry and fall out easily. Use hair care products that use natural ingredients. Toss out those hair gels, sprays, and pomades that contain plenty of harmful chemicals. If you cannot completely avoid these products, at least use them sparingly or replace them with better choices.

Ditch the hair dye and heated styling tools

Stop using styling tools that use heat, such as hair dryers, flat irons, and curling irons. These products are tough on your hair, especially with frequent usage, so use them sparingly. If you must straighten or curl your hair, there are tools that do not use heat, such as sponge rollers. Highlighting, coloring, and bleaching your hair can further damage the strands. Permanent curls and chemical straighteners should be avoided, as well, if you want thick and healthy hair. Try to appreciate your hair’s natural texture and color, and see how you can manage it without using harmful chemicals and heated tools to style it.

Treat your hair gently

Your hair is fragile. If you want it to grow thick, then you will have to be patient and treat it gently. Certain habits can damage your hair. Avoid washing your hair every day to let your scalp have enough time to produce the needed natural oils that protect your hair and keep it healthy. Washing it three times a week is ideal. You may use a dry shampoo to freshen the hair between scheduled washes.

Instead of wringing your hair, you may use a soft towel to squeeze it gently. Drop that brush and use a wide-toothed comb, instead. Brushing the hair frequently can pull the strands out, especially when it is wet. Untangle the strands with a wide-toothed comb, and your hair will thank you.

Manage stress

Stress can lead to a weaker immune system. Too much stress can take a toll on your health, and hair loss is one of the first things that will be visible. It is important to be aware of the consequences and try to figure out how you can eliminate the problem. If you cannot remove the stressor, then deal with it through healthy activities like meditating and getting adequate sleep. Exercising can help relieve stress, too.

Protect your hair from sun exposure and pollution

Your outdoor activities might be causing your hair to become thin and brittle. Luckily, there are ways to keep your hair protected from outside factors, such as wearing a hat or using an umbrella. Direct sun exposure and pollution are two of the major factors that damage your hair. Chlorine, which is often used in swimming pools, is another common cause of damaged hair, so wear a cap whenever you dive in. Make sure to wash out the chlorine as soon as you get off the pool.

Trim hair regularly

Trim your hair regularly to get rid of dull and damaged ends. Layered and shorter hairstyles can make your hair appear thicker than it looks. Visit your favorite salon every six weeks for a hair trim.

Eat nutritious food

Eating unhealthy foods will show in the texture and volume of your hair. A healthy diet will help you have thick and voluminous hair. Eat meals that are packed with vitamins and minerals to allow your hair to grow strong. Protein can also make your strands shiny and thick, so eat a lot of lean meat, eggs, nuts, and fish.

Omega-3 fatty acids stimulate your scalp to allow for hair growth, too, and they can be found in walnuts, sardines, and avocados. Leafy greens are rich in vitamin C to boost your immune system and encourage cell repair. Prenatal vitamins, for the pregnant women, also contain vitamins and minerals that promote healthy hair growth.

Try hair-thickening products

There are products out there that help thicken hair. You can find them in beauty stores in the form of balms, serums, and others designed to promote hair growth. It is important, however, to decide which product will best suit you. Growth-stimulating products are highly recommended. The results will vary from product to product, so it pays to research for reviews and be patient.

Consider hair transplants

Hair transplants are great for those suffering from severe hair loss. Such procedure will have hair follicles implanted surgically in areas that are balding or thinning. This option is often expensive, but quite effective. However, it may not be for everybody. Research thoroughly about this treatment and see a reputable doctor to see whether hair transplant is the best solution for you.

Massage your scalp

This is the simplest way to encourage healthy hair growth. Massaging your scalp will allow for increased blood circulation and blood flow. There is no need to purchase any electric massager. Simply use your hands to massage the scalp for five minutes, twice a day. You may do it once in the morning, and again at night.

Try essential oils

Essential oils have been found to promote hair growth. The cedarwood and grapeseed oils are the most popular for increasing hair thickness. You can also consider other essential oils like rosemary, lavender, and thyme. The application process is easy: just add five drops of your preferred essential oil to three tablespoons of jojoba or coconut oil. Mix them and apply on the scalp using your fingers. Massage the scalp for five more minutes, and you may repeat the process several times a week.
